FACTS ABOUT CANCER

WHAT IS CANCER?
Cancer is a broad term of disease which occurs due to uncontrolled growth of cells in an abnormal fashion. Cancer can affect almost every organ of our body. Cancerous cells keep on growing and start to spread to different organs in our body. These cells grow in an unorganised fashion and lead to different problems like feeling of a swelling or lump at different sites in the body.
CAUSES
Cancer causation is multifactorial. Our body keeps on repairing the wear and tear that keeps happening over the period of time. There are constant insults which happen in our body in daily life and the cells follow a cycle of constant growth and death. But sometimes this power to repair the damages is lost in our cells. And this is when the normal cell is converted into a cancer cell.

SCREENING
Cancer screening is a regular process of medical examination and investigations which are done in healthy people to find out if they have silently developed cancer inside. Healthy individuals might develop cancer at any point of time in their lifetime and there may essentially never be conspicuous risk factors present.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms are the problems which are felt by an individual due to the cancer development. For example pain, swelling, bleeding, any change in skin color. Symptoms depend upon the site of the body involved. An individual with brain tumor may present with:

DETECTION
Detection is The process of medical checkup by a doctor (oncologist) and all the relevant investigations to diagnose and confirm cancer. At the first visit to your doctor, you will be thoroughly examined. Your doctor will ask about the history of your symptoms : what all complaints you have, since when do you have them and how severe are your complaints.
STAGES
Cancer typically has four stages according to its severity and the extent of spread.
Stage I is usually when the disease is confined to the site/organ it has affected
Stage 2 when it has started involving locally or gone to closest or the first lymph nodes
Stage 3 when it has started to spread to more far away, surrounding organs, distant lymph nodes

GENETICS
Genetics and hereditary factors play a major role in cancer development. There are certain genes which directly play a role in causation of cancer. These genes which are inherited from one generation to another pose the risk of cancer to the receiving generation as well.
Multiple syndromes have been identified like Lynch syndrome, HNPCC, Hereditary breast and ovarian syndrome (HBOS), BRCA associated breast cancer in which genes involved in cancer causation are passed on to the next generation.
