The Primary step in cancer treatment is surgical intervention. Surgery is removal of the bulk of tumor tissue under generalized anaesthesia. It depends upon the tumor type, the site or organ which is affected & the size of the tumor- based on above factors it is decided which type of surgical intervention is feasible.
Chemotherapy is the group of cell destroying drugs also known as cytotoxic drugs which kill the tumor cells.
Cytotoxic drugs are injected into our blood so that they can travel throughout the body. These drugs primarily affect very active (rapidly dividing) cells therefore along with the destruction of tumor cells, they kill some healthy cells also.
For multiple tumor types after the surgery is done, some tumor tissue is left behind. This could be due to inaccessible location of tumor inside the body or due to large tumor size. These tumors further require treatment with radiation & chemotherapy to completely kill the tumor cells left behind.
After the treatment for cancer is complete, the person is kept under regular monitoring by the oncologist. At regular intervals, the person needs to undergo medical checkups. The purpose of these regular visits is to identify any side effects which could persist due to treatment and to catch any sign/symptom of the recurring tumor.
